Who We Are

Our History

A group of 45 individuals first gathered in one home on January 1, 2003 to discuss starting a church that would reach out to unchurched people. These individuals envisioned the kind of church that would be characterized by grace, love and support. They envisioned the kind of church where, no matter their background, an individual looking for a fresh start could discover what life was really all about. It was in that light that the name True Life Christian Church came into being.

True Life started in the basement of a doctor’s office, then to the YMCA in Afton, then on to Williamsburg High School, and in the spring of 2009 God blessed us with what used to be known as “The Carpet House.”

In 2012 True Life purchased land on Eastwood Road; we spent several years paying the land off. In 2017 we began the process of building on the land. In October of 2018 we held Harvestfest in the shell of the building as a way to celebrate the building. On Mother’s Day of 2019 we held our first service official service to open the building.

True Life Christian Church is an independent, non-denominational Christian church. We are united in our core, essential beliefs of Christianity and accept and embrace our differences in non-essential beliefs.

our vision

We exist to lead people along life’s journey into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

No matter if you’re a person who is skeptical about Christ, a seeker who is searching for answers, a new Christian who is trying to figure out your place in God’s kingdom, or a fully devoted follower of Jesus there is another step in the journey. No matter where you are on this spectrum we want to lead you into taking that next step in following Jesus.

Strategy: We will grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ by creating opportunities to draw near to God, being open with one another about God and life, and serving the communities around us.

True Life has created programs and projects that provide people with opportunities to fulfill our vision. We hope that during our worship experience you will draw near to God through the music, prayer time, communion, and message. We desire for our Life Groups to create an atmosphere that allows people to be open with each other about God and life. Throughout the year we are trying to create opportunities for people to serve the communities around us. We hope that you’ll grow as you experience Christ in different ways.

Our Core Values

Genesis 1; Deuteronomy 32:46-47; 2 Timothy 3:16- 17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:19-21

God’s Word is perfect, relevant, and unchanging. We believe God’s Word has authority over our lives. We believe God’s Word:

  • Shows the Light (Jesus).
  • Reveals our darkness.
  • Illuminates the Path to obeying God.
  • Transforms us to be more like the Light (Jesus).

Acts 2:42-47; Acts 4:32-34; John 17:16-26; Hebrews 10:24-25; Hebrews 3:12-15

Bonded by the covenant Jesus made with us:

We love

Love is a group effort. We love together as one community,

Love is transparent.  We don’t cover our own sins (only Jesus covers sin).

We hold each other accountable to the life Christ calls us to as an act of love, by being transparent, accountable, together.

We live

We believe in our Life Groups and God’s work in them.

The home symbolizes the every-day living.  This is where we must live for Christ, not just in the Church building.

We will commit to walk with each other in our physical, emotional, and spiritual hurts.

We celebrate

Joys: We celebrate joys together

Sorrows: We celebrate sorrows as we remember the hope we have in Christ

Gospel: We celebrate the greatest gift we have ever received.

Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 3:27-29; Colossians 3:12-17; 2 Peter 3:18; Luke 10:25-37

We have been received into God’s Family by grace through faith alone. Therefore we will be:

Led by Grace

We will be a people who live our lives as Christ-followers knowing that it is all by grace.  It is by God’s grace that we will grow to be more like Jesus.

Motivated by Grace

It is grace that motivates us to live lives that honor Jesus.  We desire to be motivated by God’s grace rather than condemnation and guilt.

Extend Grace

We will be a church that is multi-denominational.  We desire for all people who belong to Jesus to worship and serve together.  We will cling to essential beliefs, but extend grace to non-essential beliefs.

Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 1:16; Romans; 10:9; 1 Corinthians 1:24; Colossians 3:1-17

Jesus’ last command will be our first priority because he has authority.  Therefore we will:

Go

We want our people to make disciples as they go.  “Going” means that disciple-making is not just in the four walls of the building, but as you go about your daily life.

Reach

As believers in Christ, we have been changed by the Gospel.  Therefore, we will reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Teach

Learning to be more like Jesus, we will:

  1. Weekly Teach the Word of God
  2. Participate in Life Groups, Bible Studies, and Missional Groups.
  3. Take time to personally Study God’s Word.
  4. Participate in Ministry Opportunities Inside and/or Outside TLC.

Send

We will use our resources to train and encourage Christ-followers to take the gospel to their neighbors and the ends of the earth.

Matthew 20:28; Galatians 5:13; Philippians 2:3-8; 1 Peter 4:10; Galatians 5:13

We will be a church that serves others because God first served us.  We will serve:

Generously

We will be generous in our resources, time, and energy.

Intentional

We will serve through organized service projects, while at the same time, empowering and encouraging each other to seize opportunities to serve on their own.

Spirit-filled

We will ask the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, empower, and fill us as we serve.

Our Beliefs

There are black and white issues in the Bible that we have unity on. There are also gray areas in the Bible that allow for liberty in understanding the application for our lives today. The thing that we always want to make clear is that love toward each other needs to be the very thing that binds us together. Below is a statement that TLC desires to practice.

In essential beliefs- we have unity.

In non-essential beliefs- we have liberty.

In all beliefs- we have charity.

The Essentials we Believe:

God is the Creator and Ruler of the Universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus live a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to take Christians home with Him.

The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian form the moment of Salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved.

The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Since God’s Word is the only completely reliable and truthful authority, we accept the Bible as our manual for living. Our first question when faced with a decision in “What does the Bible say?” The Bible is the basis for all we believe.

People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of  God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude or action of disobedience toward God called “sin.” Sin separates people from God and causes many problems in life.

Salvation simply means that we are being saved from death for life. Salvation can only be found in Jesus Christ. We receive salvation through placing our trust in Him alone. As believers in Christ, we are called to confess our  faith, repent of our sins, be baptized and to live lives as faithful followers of Christ.

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with  Him is eternal life in heaven. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.
